10 Common Symptoms of Depression
Depression is a mental health condition. It centers on a relentless depressed mood or loss of interest and motivation in activities and tasks, such as walking your dog, playing sports, or going out with friends. Depression can definitely affect your daily life. A combination of biological, psychological, and social sources of distress may be the reason for depression due to changes in your brain functions.
Depression is very common, with more than 3 million cases diagnosed each year in the United States. Medication and therapy are used to treat depression and normalize brain changes.
Symptom 1: Sadness
Do you feel sad? Hopeless? About everything?
Everyone feels sad once in a while. But with depression, such feelings last a long time or are ongoing. The level of sadness they experience is debilitating, making them unable to function in their daily life.
Symptom 2: Frustration
Do you get mad or frustrated over small issues? With depression, it is difficult to not sweat the small stuff!
In a post on Beyondblue.org, one patient stated: “For a long time, in parallel to my depression I have suffered what I can only describe as constant frustration. It is an overall tension and has caused many physical symptoms like stress, migraines, high blood pressure yadda, yadda, etc. I've discussed it with psycho's in the past but never got close to an answer. They womble on about relaxation and meditation which fail for me. So here is the question to the community. Do other people find themselves constantly frustrated and stressed to the point of physical stress symptoms, or even self-harm? Does your depression drive you to panic and freak out at things normal people would not sweat?”
Symptom 3: Trouble Sleeping
Do you have issues with sleeping? Suffer from insomnia? Or sleeping too much? Do you have restless sleep? Wake up early? Sleeping problems could be due to depression, while a lack of sleep can make you feel even more depressed.
According to NCBI, “About three quarters of depressed patients have insomnia symptoms, and hypersomnia is present in about 40% of young depressed adults and 10% of older patients, with a preponderance in females. The symptoms cause huge distress, have a major impact on quality of life, and are a strong risk factor for suicide.”
Symptom 4: Fatigue
Do you feel tired? Lack energy to do anything? Depression can cause fatigue. According to Healthline.com, “When people feel tired, they may not have the motivation or energy to do their daily activities.”
In an article on Themighty.com by Olivia James, she stated: “I’ve had friends tell me they’ve felt the extreme fatigue of depression long after they began feeling better, even when their depression was in remission. At the time I didn’t think much of this because I was in the midst of a many-years-long, serious depressive episode and couldn’t really imagine the depression being ‘in remission.’ Why did I care if the exhaustion stuck around? It’s been the better part of two years since I’ve really felt crushed under depression. I have my feet under me these days, and most symptoms have disappeared entirely (ask me about how miraculous it feels not to always feel afraid). But despite all the progress I’ve made, there’s one thing that sticks around, and nothing I do can shift it. I’m talking about the fatigue. The exhaustion. My ability to sleep 10 hours a night and still get worn out. The way I have to pass out for a day every few months just to start feeling human again.”
Symptom 5: Restlessness
Do you feel restless? Or have anxiety? Rather than feeling slow or lethargic, you may experience “mixed mania,” where you become restless, angry, and agitated.
According to a Studentsagainstdepression.org, “Do you find it hard to settle down to a task, or to sit still for any length of time? Some people are naturally energetic, but depression can bring a troubling sense of restlessness and inability to focus. Being constantly keyed up and over-alert in this way is very draining, in turn decreasing resistance to depression.”
Symptom 6: Guilt
Do you suffer from excessive guilt? Shame? Do you fixate on past failures? Depression can make you negatively focus on things that you do or the kind of person you are.
According to healthline.com, “Their conscience blows things out of proportion, causing them to feel disproportionately guilty and remorseful. These emotions are usually accompanied by low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness.”
Symptom 7: Death
Do you frequently think about death? Do you have suicidal thoughts? Depression can be life-threatening. According to WebMD, “Over 90% of people who die by suicide have clinical depression or another diagnosable mental disorder.”

Symptom 8: Losing Interest
Have you lost interest or pleasure in almost any activity? Could you care less about activities you used to enjoy, such as exercising, spending time with family and friends, or going to concerts and shows? No longer able to enjoy life?
Depression causes you to lose interest in almost everything.
Symptom 9: Loss of Appetite/Excessive Hunger
When suffering from depression, you may lose weight because of a loss of appetite. Or, you may gain weight because you tend to eat excessively when you are sad and depressed.
According to everyday Health, “"Many people with depression lose both energy and interest. While loss of appetite is a common depression symptom, feelings of sadness or worthlessness can make some people overeat.”
Symptom 10: Unable to Concentrate
Have a lack of concentration? Are you slow when performing a task or activity? Do you repeatedly go over thoughts?
Depression can make you unable to focus, process memories, and concentrate.
